Crumlin welcomed New Panteg to the Kay Field in the first round of this year’s Nation Division 4 Cup. After reaching the final 2 seasons ago and winning the Division 5 Cup last season hopes were high for another good run in the cup. New Panteg are based between Pontypool and Cwmbran and were formed when Panteg joined forces with New Inn in the early 90’’s. In those times they were an extremely successful team winning the Pontypool and District Cup (Ivor Jones Cup) 10 years in a row as soon as they started playing in it. They made the Welsh Brewers Cup Quarter-Finals twice as well as playing in a Semi-Final once. They also produced 4 Welsh District Capped players. At present they lie right behind us in third in the league with 2 wins and a draw.
For the 3rd week running numbers were low and particularly in the pack. Aston Gaylard had his first run at hooker as Jacob Hill was injured. Jordan Hughes was the only one of our second rows available and this was his first game of the season. Flanker Euan Lewis was pressed into action in the row alongside Jordan. Zak Griffiths was making his second appearance of the season off the bench and Gavin Hipkiss returned after a couple of weeks off.
New Panteg kicked off and quickly found themselves with a kickable penalty where their kicker duly converted.

Crumlin tried to play all the rugby and eventually got their reward as Panteg’s fullback killed the ball when Crumlin got close to the line. A yellow card but no Penalty try was the decision which would eventually prove to be crucial. Crumlin chose the scrum and pushed back Teg for Kyle Walton to get the try. The conversion was wide.

The second half continued with Crumlin trying to play but making too many errors and conceding penalties. Pantegs kickers were having a fine games and put in some good quality positional kicks.
It was the Crumlin pack though that lead the way and Steele Jones this time was the beneficiary as he touched down and Barnes converted.

Late on a penalty on half way was taken quickly by Teg and they went down the right hand side to score a very good try in the corner. The kicker once again proved his worth as he brought them within a score.

Then yet another penalty saw the Teg kicker deliver an excellent and decisive score to take the lead.

Congratulations to New Panteg on their win and all at Crumlin wish them every success in the next round at Caerau Ely. Crumlin visit New Panteg in December and then the home league match is the last fixture of the year so some good tough games to look forward to.
Crumlin now return to league action and look forward to the visit to Powys and Crickhowell RFC which was the site of one of last seasons 2 losses. This will be an extremely tough game as both sides know each other well and there were 2 excellent games last year both finishing in home wins and by the single score.
